Gold, Diamond, and status
Daisy, from the book The Great Gatsby, is often seen as someone who is filled with Gold, what gold is that??? The gold status is being the "Golden Girl", the ultimate female who everyone wishes to attain, for example, both Tom and Gatsby wanted Daisy, but what about Daisy? What did she want?
In chapter 7, we witness the ultimate cumulation of everything, Daisy's ultimate confession to Tom, that she never loved him, and that was something that struck him deep down, but then... why did she marry Tom. When Daisy and Gatsby were together, Gatsby was a beautiful piece of coal, but not yet pressured into a diamond, because of this. When they parted ways, Gatsby was busy with his military life, and Daisy went to find gold, aka wealth, status, and glamor. From this Gatsby went and bounced high for him and for her. Purchasing a property just across from, just in sight. Gatsby, now forged into a diamond is now something that is appealing to Daisy and now she wants him... The end.
But wait... this blog is about cars, so where is it??? Well just like Daisy, the vehicle industry over the last, say 5 years has been transitioning into EV (Electric Vehicles), just to adhere to EPA guidelines and look green to consumers. Tom, who is now transitioning car companies seems beautiful, shiny gold. But wrong, with electricity costs rising faster than ever, many don't want it anymore and miss their ICE (internal combustion engine). Toyota, who has refused to move to electric vehicles during the 5 years perfected their hybrid terrain system. Now, like Daisy, everyone is running to Toyota to get their cheap, affordable hybrid cars that give them better mileage, giving them less pain at the gas station, and happier about the environment with less waste coming from the car. The gold status... what about that? Well, that's what everyone is fighting for now, no car company is perfect and neither was Daisy, this status is only given by people who want them, Tom and Gatsby both wanted Daisy and that was their goal. That's why they worked so hard, yet Nick who doesn't really care about Daisy doesn't have any opinion about Daisy. So in conclusion, status is only given if you give them your attention. You might think that BMW is the ultimate car company, but this is because this is what everyone else thinks, now they have status. But Toyota. TOYOTA??? No one cares about them, so no status.
There was a video I saw on Youtube, there was an "experiment" done where they asked someone who wasn't from the US and asked, do you know what Harvard is??? And he replied, "Harvard??? never heard of that." Once your status is taken away, for example, telling someone you go the prestigious Harvard and they don't know what that is, then what are you??? Probably some random person that went to Harvard and has Ivy league status.
I really like your connection between Gatsby and a piece of coal yet to be refined to a diamond. Although I lack an interest in cars, your explanation of status using car brands was digestible. I think your outside evidence of the YouTube video you saw helped to strengthen your argument about the value we place upon status.
ReplyDeleteYour connection from Great Gatsby to electric cars was really cool to see how it all worked out and made sense. Daisy running to a more reliable toyota made me laugh. The interview of the guy outside the US was also interesting as it strengthened your argument.
