Opportunities within Chaos
When people think about "chaos" all they see are negative issues, like war, death, etc, although true there are sometimes opportunities that arise from problems like these.
Although many might say that it is harsh or even wrong to say something like this, I believe that they haven't thought it through. For example, in The Best We Could Do, why did Bui's family escape?
It was because there was a war and at the time it was too dangerous for them to properly live the life they wanted to, so they moved to America. Now, someone would argue that, "OMG, what do you mean??? The parents had horrible lives and the kids also suffered too!"
Bro chill, and think about the long-term effects, Bui's child had no effects of war on him and no memories of it. This is positive of it, people need to think long-term about effects such as these. Building up the infrastructure from a war can reintroduce industries so local businesses can fix things, unfortunately though, this isn't the reality of the world currently. In places such as Africa where underdeveloped places need urgent changes to keep up with the world, countries such as China take advantage of this, building the infrastructure and businesses for them and basically becoming an extended part of them somewhere else.
In Baddawi, we also see a similar effect on the character's life. We began with the parents moving because they found a better job and with it offering a safe place to live. After Ahmad (main character) finishes school for the year, moves to where his father works, where it is a much safer place. Why did they move in the end? Because the "ethnic cleansing" disrupted their life and made it ultimately a hazardous place to stay.
But sometimes it can be taken to a much larger degree, we see all over the world that people from war-torn countries run to places like the U.K. and the U.S.A. seeking asylum, and with open hands we welcome them. Although many are like, "Yeah, we should help them" to them I say that we have no obligation and they bring their problems with them, many of the people that actually come over are military-age males. Not only that, with conditions unknown to them they resort to crime and other various tactics to live which actually make our lives more miserable to tense.
So is it good that chaos happens as it changes alters people's lives and gives opportunities or is it bad that chaos happens and that everything should stay the same? Because some of the greatest human achievements were made through war and are the only things that make it to the history books, generals, technological advancements, etc.
I like how you took a stance that would be deemed to be devils advocate. You approached the good and bad that grow from chaos in ways I never would have thought of, like the whole infrastructure thingamabob. Your takes would be deemed very controversial depending on who you talk to, but I commemorate that you decided to put them out there. It gets the people thinking.
