Everything has repercussions
It's remarkable when you realize that the same materials found on Earth have been transformed by humans into items such as cameras, which capture moments, or technology that enables long-distance communication. But these don't come without repercussions; for these things to be made, the surrounding environment had to undergo mass changes, for example, the excavation for these precious materials. It doesn't just end there; child labor is used to create many objects that we use every day.
History also provides a few examples of this; for example, the discovery of the New World came with multiple benefits, but Native Americans in the thousands died due to the diseases and other variants brought by the Europeans, along with enslavement for labor.
These are the indirect effects of discoveries. However, it can also expand to the individual who made this discovery or creation. An example of this can be seen from the packet we received this week, where the example of Marie Curie was used. From this example, we quickly learned that these discoveries also came with allusions, as it was described that Curie, "denying her wounds came from the same source as her power."
This has also been seen in many other ways; advancements have been made in the nuclear section. But, as the topic states, nothing comes without repercussions. As a society, it would be best to utilize nuclear energy and save the environment from the pollutions that would come from traditional energy, instead, we decided to create the world's deadliest weapons from it, killing millions.
This isn't just isolated on the global scale; we also suffer from this. With every decision we make, we either lose out or suffer from something. Choosing to participate in sports and clubs, we lose the opportunity to hang out with friends and come home tired, with barely enough energy to get homework done
I like how you connects discoveries to their consequences. The Marie Curie quote adds depth, and the personal examples make the theme relatable. Great job showing how progress always comes with a cost.
ReplyDeleteI like what you said about humans being able to transform materials from the earth into amazing technology with great potential, and yet, because of greed this technology is now being mass produced for money at the expense of the environment and through child labor. I also like how you used personal examples from everyday life.
ReplyDeleteI really like your metaphor of how you were able to connect your topic to not just a global audience, but even getting more specific to the ones who are mostly reading your blog the most: high schoolers. Explaining how sports are choices with repercussions as well as you lose the opportunity of relaxing, hanging out with friends, etc. all so you can add another thing to your high school transcript for colleges to look at.
